Organic Youth Hostels

I’ve just returned from a 3 country holiday in Europe (Germany, Austria, Italy) and made a conscious effort to be as organic and environmentally friendly as possible and not leave anything but footprints.

We travelled by car and train (rather than flying), with the exception of getting to/from Germany, camped in tents and stayed in Environmentally Friendly Youth Hostels for the remainder of our stay.

Where possible we purchased liquids in bulk to reduce packaging, and bought local wines and produce (no food miles to worry about), carefully disposing of any remaining packaging and rubbish in recycling depots rather than landfill sites.
There is a huge ‘green’ push in Europe, with many locals adopting recycling schemes, buying locally, travelling efficiently and respecting the outdoors and preserving it for generations to come.

There is a large variety of Organic publications in Europe, and many newspapers reporting on Organic achievements and all about environmental initiatives.

Compared to Europe there is not enough being done in the UK to help protect and maintain a healthy environment.

Organic foods are cheaper in Europe than the UK, and environmentally friendly fuels are also cheaper than their leaded alternatives.
Bio-Diesel is widely available and a greater number of cars run diesel than petrol.

Power consumption must be less too as more people use the outdoors until dark than we do in the UK, preferring to mingle with their Neighbours than watch Neighbours on TV.
