Ice Anyone?
Well, I have to say that is a pretty big berg that has broken loose up north, so I’m pretty surprised that it took the boffins so long to notice it.
Its not a nice thing to see really and its another warning to us all that things are changing. When a slab of ice that has been in place for thousands of years breaks free its time to sit up and listen. Not to mention the fact that its Manhattan-esque in its size being 16km long and 5km wide.
Dr Copeland, one of the maniac scientists who landed on the berg to take measurements had this to say.
“This shows how climate change can trigger very sudden changes even on a massive scale - when the ice shelf broke away, the rupture registered with the force of a small earthquake,”
One thing I have to say though is why have they attached a tracker? I mean this isn’t like the Walruses that the BBc team are tracking, or the Canada Geese tracked crossing the Arctic circle, this is a 87.1 sq km block of ice, I’d like to think it couldn’t slip away unnoticed.
