Disappointment with local farmers market

Friday, January 19th, 2007

Perhaps we arrived too early, perhaps it wasn’t the right time of year, but last weekend I was very disillusioned with a Farmers Market in NorthWest London, with a poor selection of stalls (variety wise) and hardly any ‘realistically priced’ items.

To these farmers the phrase ‘organic’ must just be a glorified cash cow.

We’re off out into the countryside this weekend (well beyond the boundaries of the M25) and will grab all the fruit and veg we can, from the farmer on their home patch, although I’m not sure how I will apply the food miles calculation as we will be travelling to meet the produce…

OrganicLinker Evolves with Red Tigers Help

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Red Tiger DesignThanks to everyone who sends us emails and comments regularly we love to hear from you and it spurs us on to make the site bigger and better.

To this end, we are pleased that we can announce that we have “commissioned” a new design from the guys over at Red Tiger Design to revamp the current look of the site so that we can continue to move forward.

I have worked with Red Tiger before with another project and feel they are the best in what they do. They make it less scary for me and I have no hesitation in recommending them to any readers of the site.

We are working to get the new look published so please bear with us as there may seem to be a slowing down of activity - this will only be a temporary thing and we will return raring to go!!

Kids Cartoons revisited

Wednesday, January 10th, 2007

Following on from a previous post (Meatrix part 1), I thought I’d put up a link to the sequels to the Meatrix. The Meatrix is a clever little cartoon that uses the basic plot of the Matrix to push a message about intensive farming and the related issues.
The Meatrix II :Revolting

I think these films are a really good way of getting an important message across. I would recommend watching the short film yourself first before you decide to show your kids as it may be a bit upsetting in places.

The main advantage of these cartoons is that they are no where near as hard to follow as the Matrix!!

Can The PM Take A Holiday?

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

Today it appears the PM is again in the spotlight for doing something “wrong” - admitting he wouldn’t be happy to give up his holidays abroad.

Should he be allowed to holiday abroad? I think so, I mean he does have a particularly stressful job and I think its in the public interest that he stays focused. At least he isn’t jetting off all over the world on a regular basis, that would be an environmental “mick take”.

I like the fact that the PM is realistic in his views about climate change (on certain issues) , he realises that it is unrealistic to expect people to give up flying abroad, or hard to imagine people giving up their cars. He and the government need to figure out ways of reducing the emissions that these modes of transport cause and coming up with new ways to combat a very real threat!

Fly abroad? Yes, accept climate change? No.

Organic Good? Organic Bad?

Monday, January 8th, 2007

It seems as though the whole argument has opened up again about the benefits of organic foods.

In an interview with the Sunday Times David Miliband, the environment secretary, said that organic food was a lifestyle choice and there is no hard evidence that it is actually better for you.

This seems to have sparked a new discussion on the benefits of Organic food over conventionally farmed food.

Food Miles In The News

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

It was great to see Channel 4 news feature a report about the growing interest in food miles and ethical farming.

It seems that more people are starting to realise that this is an important issue and not one that can be taken lightly.

the piece can be seen on the Channel 4 website here.

Don’t forget to check out our food miles calculator which you can use to get an idea of how far a food has come. -> Food Miles Calculator
