Blossoming where you’re planted

The latest Organic Linker poll has reminded me of a concept that has been buzzing around in my mind for a few years now and goes back to my aromatherapy training and James Lovelock’s Gaia theory.

During the anatomy and physiology modules of my course, specifically cell function, we were taught that every cell in the body is constructed in the same way, but each healthy

Poll - When Buying a car does fuel economy and emissions come into the equation?

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Its interesting to look at the results of our poll asking about fuel economy as a factor when buying a new car.

Im glad to see that 75% of those who answered considered it when buying a new car and 31% said that it was the primary factor. This at least shows that peoples thinking is heading in the right direction.

Lets just hope that the 11% who answered “I dont care about thinks like that” do start to consider it important soon, as its down to everyone to make sure we do our bit!

3 bags of recycling per week

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

We’ve been extra vigilant over the past few weeks, recycling as much as possible, composting where we can and minimising waste. We used to go through 2-3 bags of rubbish per week and 1-2 of recycling. Now we are recycling 3 bags per week and have managed to cut down to 1 bag of rubbish. We shred our paper, remove staples from documents and through switching products we buy at the supermarket have managed to reduce food wrappers to a minimum.

Our local vegetable market uses paper bags (and only seldom offers plastic carry bags). We take our own carry-all and get that filled up, further reducing the amount of waste we bring home, not to mention it’s cheaper than buying from the supermarket too.

Taking small steps to reduce waste can have a big impact on the environment.

Sow and Grow your own = Value for money

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

£2.99 bought me a ‘grow your own tomatos’ kit earlier this year, and we’ve been repaid with several kilos of quality homegrown organic tomatos, with still over 25 tomatos yet to ripen.

Sweet and succulent and jucier than any that have been carted many miles around the country, this crop has served us well.

We kept only 5 plants but could have planted 20+ from all the seeds that germinated.

Now is a good time to sow your hardy winter crops, whilst the ground is still warm and there is a little time left for late summer sun germination.

The frosts will arrive soon so plant wisely.

Leave us a comment and tell us what crops you are planting.

Winter soup recipe in next weeks post.
