Free Frost Alert

Welcome to the new OrganicLinker.com Frost alert system.

What are you talking about?

Well, imagine the scene, spring has finally sprung so you get into the garden to plant all your plugs and seedlings all ready for the coming summer. Then out of the blue the weather turns for a couple of days, but you didnt know it was coming!

Well, now you can. The frost alert system is a simple email alert so you can enter your town or city, then choose the conditions you want to be alerted about and we can do the rest! You will receive an email the day before a predicted cold spell that will give you time to protect your precious crops.

In the initial stages Frost Alert is only available in the UK and the US at the moment.

Is frost that bad?

It can be. Many plants will be damaged or killed by freezing temperatures or frost, especially some of the more tender ones. Crops like Tomatoes can be hit particularly bad by unexpected frosts as their fruits will be damaged.

What should I do?

If you know a frost is due the easiest way of protecting them is to cover them with a protective blanket over a frame. This could be as simple as a draping some newspaper or bubble wrap over the plants, anything to prevent the heat from escaping overnight. It is important to make sure you remove the covers when the frost thaws as the plants may get too hot or dry!

Potted plants can be dealt with in a similar fashion, or in some cases brought into the house if the frost looks to be too bad!

Keep plants well watered. Dehydrated plants tend to be worse effected as the damage occurs when ice crystals form on the leaf surface drawing moisture from the leaf tissue. So the more dehydrated the less moisture can be drawn.

The Frost Alert Tool.
