Good advice but bad timing, salad can be grown basically all year round- apart from summer when if you are not very careful it will bolt upwards rather than outwards- its not impossible to grow, just not ideal- however a great thing to plant, particularly next to tomatoes is basil, the two not only compliment each other in food they work really well together in the garden. The basil wards pest off the toms, and the toms provide shade for the basil. Marigolds work equally well with toms, and though they are pretty don't taste as nice.
If you have too much basil, is there such a thing?, you can make home made pesto- delicious.
