My father-in-law, in Somerset, has just done exactly that! Write to the council and if there are at least 10 of you, they have to do something about it.
I've always just used bits of the garden, as I don't have enough time to devote to it, so just do the easy stuff, tomatoes, courgettes and potatoes in buckets, along with raspberry canes and apple trees. |

We've sadly had to give up our allotment.
The rights to it were recalled (after receiving the keys!) as the council had double let it, so we were placed back on the waiting list. A new plot came up but it was not suitable, so we informed the council of this and sent the key back. 2 weeks later we received the contract, the key, and an invoice for the plot we declined. We have sent the keys back again with a letter advising this plot should be let to someone who wants to take one on in the area offered. So, we are back to being without an allotment and will use the time cultivating vegetables on our patio instead, taking our garden to the urban jungle. The neighbours have already expressed an interest in eating our veggies - we have suggested they grow their own!
