We are going to try oat bran. We've read that slugs can't digest it. We also use bamboo skewers for midnight impalings. But the hubby really loves the idea of ducks. I and my neighbors are opposed.

hmm ducks.
My neighbours had ducks during the school holidays and I think that they found the amount of mess they left behind them a bit too much!!!!!

Did anybody see the River Cottage of a couple of weeks ago where Hugh Fearnely-Whatsisname was testing the theory of whether slugs could be used in cooking the same way as snails are?

(The answer is a resounding No, in case you're tempted to try...)

Ah no, tell me he didn't- not even my neighbours would try that, and as they are all French and peasants that's saying something- was invited out last winter and the main course for wild boar head!

In the end he ended up basically scooping out all of the insides as they were too bitter, stuffing them and serving them as hor d'oeuvres - still didn't really work because they're a bit too rubbery though...

Right next time Hugh invites me round for a meal I will politely turn him down.

I hate slugs, and the only environmentally friendly way of dealing with them is to either use salt and carpet bomb them, or set shallow saucers of beer out- they smell it out and then drown, presumably in a very merry way.

Chickens are ideal for slug clearence, but they also dig up your garden. Ducks are even better but they make hell of a mess of your garden and pond.

I do a dusk raiding party on slugs, armed with a bowl of salty water. pick them up and drop them in, and in the morning, pour the liquid down the drain.
The frogs in our garden don't seem to do anything to keep the numbers down.
Unfortunately, were we live, we are not allowed to keep any poultry, but would love to have ducks again - my parents kept ducks and chickens when we were kids, the chickens were a bit standoffish, but the ducks didn't mind being cuddled.....
