My boyfriend suggests trying to attract toads to your garden as you don't need a pond and, like frogs, they enjoy a dinner of slugs. You can do this by burying an earthenware pot upside down, or similar container, as they like to live in caves underground.

That's a great tip thanks. How do the toads get in the pot though? will they dig down or do i need to make a hole for them?

They can burrow as long as the earth is loose, like it would be in a dug garden.

Coffee grounds work wonders - slugs hate them - texture and taste - it has been known to make then 'froth'

Don't know about slugs but our snails tend to overwinter in one particular spot so it is easy just to pick them up every spring and deposit them safely by the river - i like my neighbours and they would only come back if i did the usual thing!

Hi!

A quick update.

The new pond went into the ground today and, within an hour, was inhabited by 3 pairs of "inseparable" frogs. Obviously there is no natural food in there for them yet, but at least they have a place to lay their spawn.

So, hopefully, slugs won't be a problem for us this year!:)

I am however, chair of the school garden committee and we are about to put a pond in. I would love to see a picture of your pond and if you wouldn't mind, it would be great to hear about the planting that you have chosen as we are trying to find out which plants to buy bearing in mind that it is a wildlife pond we are aiming for.
Many thanks.

Just watch what your doing when mowing the lawn! Frogs and mowers don't get on too well together.

The Dorset Wildlife Trust lady that I spoke to said you'd be surprised how quickly you get wildlife into a new pond byt that's amazing.
