Default Too much meat?

Do we eat too much meat?

According to Rajendra Pachauri, who chairs the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we do!

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Shun meat, says UN climate chief

How much do you get through in your average week?

Im going to have a count up this week - why not do it too and we can all compare

I couldn't go veggie again, I was brought up veggie until I was 16. Ever since then, I've had to have meat every day!!
I eat way too much meat, going through about £30 worth a week.

I have been a vegetarian off and on for more years than I can remember, but any time my meat input is miniscule, I have a bit of bacon now and then, only because of the irrestible smell, and the occasional bit of fish but apart from that I do not eat meat - I was actually made to be more aware by my daughter who turned vegetarian at 11 !!

that shamed me into being much more particular about eating meat.

what started me was years ago seeing a program on tv where they were making sausages, putting in all this chopped meat, cereal and then coming up and putting a bucket of something that did not look too good, they then said that they were adding a bucket of fat to bring out the taste - nearly made me throw up.

other thing that got me was one day when I was making chili and I looked at the minced meat and remembered back to watching Fargo and how bad it was seeing body parts put into a wood chipper, yet mincing up animals is all right !!

whadefu, I may not be perfect but I try and eat as little meat as I possibly can, I now use veggie mince for my chili !!

Eating too much meat be bad for you, but it also has a major negative impact on the environment.

Eating less meat does not seem like it should have a huge impact on the environment, but it does. Between the fertilizers for the animals crops, gases emitted by the livestock and transportation to markets cause tons of greenhouse gases. You would think that the most damaging part is the transportation, but it is in fact not the case. What is a huge surprise is that most of the greenhouse gases caused from producing meats and not transportation. The majority come from methane gases emitted by animals such as cows and fertilizers. Methane gases are actually much more dangerous for the environment than carbon dioxide.

I've recently gone vegetarian and love it! I don't miss meat at all and knowing I'm helping the environment and animals at the same time makes me feel even better.

The best thing to do is eat better quality meat less often: i.e. locally sourced, organically produced stuff from your farm shop or otherwise.

You'll end up spending about the same amount, but it will be healthier for you, and have less impact on the environment.

This is the policy we've had in place since I worked on the Pig Business website back at the start of the year! (Scary stuff...)

I wrote an article about this, which was first published in Life Peak Magazine, and then highlighted on our site, ecoki.com.

This is it here... and feel free to comment!
