Hi Guys

Bokashi - its an amazing way to get rid of your kitchen wastes....

'the science bit'

Bokashi is Japanese for fermented organic matter and basically it is bran that has been innoculated with lots of special bacteria called effective microorganisims (ems for short).

you simply sprinkle the bran over your kitchen waste in an air tight container the anerobic (no oxygen) bacteria start to work, and starts to pickle the waste.
After the waste has been pickled for a few weeks, it can then be placed into a trench, compost heap or wormery, where a different type of bacteria that likes oxygen will make it compost down in a matter of weeks.
Plants love it, great for the soil (worms love it to !)

even if you dont have a garden and you sent your 'bokashi'd waste to landfill it would compost down straight away and add nutrition to the surrounding area, but wouldn't produce all the harmful methane that is associated with rotting food and waste.

simple really >:D>
